Bringing Mid-Market Back to its Historic Roots

The stretch of Mid-Market Street between 5th and 6th Streets was historically a vibrant center of activity for the city of San Francisco. Bustling storefronts opened to Market and Turk Streets, both of which boasted heavy foot traffic. Turk Street was once a one-way gateway that brought people traveling by car into the heart of the city, and Market Street featured street cars over brick-paved surfaces.

To learn about the rich history of the Tenderloin community, we encourage you to visit the recently-opened Tenderloin Museum at 398 Eddy Street. The museum’s permanent display tells the story of the 31-block neighborhood from its rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake to present day.
